Spanish Education
The Spanish Education major (B.S.Ed.) prepares students to become licensed foreign language teachers in Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ. To obtain a teaching license, students must complete the program, achieve passing scores on state licensure exams and a Teacher Performance Assessment, and pass oral and written proficiency exams. The program follows national standards, equipping future teachers to foster classrooms that help students develop cultural understanding and language fluency and gain the skills needed for active, informed citizenship.

Admissions Information
Students enrolled in teacher education programs (known as teacher candidates) must meet additional requirements to continue in the program (see below for additional details):
- Admission to Teacher Candidacy (typically at the end of the first year)
- Admission to Advanced Standing (typically at the end of the second year)
- Admission to the Professional Internship (typically at the end of the third year)
Freshman/First-Year Admission
All students pursuing teacher education programs at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University are subject to the Selective Admission and Retention Program in teacher education. Criteria and procedures are available in the Office of Student Affairs, Patton Hall.
Regional campus students should check with their Office of Student Affairs or the Dean's office on the regional campus for information.

Curriculum
The Spanish Education Major requires the completion of 120 semester hours. Aside from pre-teacher candidacy and professional internship in teaching courses, students take core courses that help them build an educational foundation, learn the methods for teaching foreign languages, and become fluent in Spanish. Through electives, students learn more about culture and civilization, linguistics, Latin American literature, and Peninsular Literature.
Opportunities Upon Graduation
After graduating from the modern language education program at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University, students are prepared to become licensed foreign language teachers in Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ. They will be equipped to teach French or Spanish at the middle and high school levels, helping students develop language fluency and cultural understanding.
Graduates will also have the necessary skills to foster active and informed citizenship in their students. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to work in various educational settings, including public schools, private institutions, or potentially pursue further studies in education or language-related fields.

CARE Program
Candidates can complete the standard AYA program or can apply to participate in the Creative, Active, and Reflective Educators (CARE) program. CARE is a unique partnership with the Federal Hocking School District and includes a focus on democratic education, specialized coursework, and additional classroom experiences that emphasize the whole child from K-12.

Overseas Student Teaching
The Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching (COST) program offers teacher candidates the unique opportunity to live abroad for an entire semester while completing their professional internship. The program offers students professional and personal growth in ways that are increasingly important for living and teaching in the United States.
