Learning Community Student Leaders
Learning Community Student Leaders aid students’ social and academic development in their transition to ĢƵ University by serving as an immediate line of support.
Learning Communities (LC) at ĢƵ University are designed to improve the academic success and retention of new, primarily first-year, students by creating learning-based peer networks. In each community, a group of up to 25 students co-enroll in a set of thematically linked courses. One Learning Community Leader (LCL) is assigned to each Learning Community.
Campus Connection communities are designed to support the transition of Transfer and Relocate students to ĢƵ University and the Athens campus. In each community, a group of up to 25 students are enrolled in a seminar course. One Peer Leader is assigned to each of the Campus Connection communities.
Student Leaders can also expect to grow themselves personally and professionally through their employment in our office. These students grow their leadership skills through practice with effective communication, facilitation, community building, and conflict resolution.
Each student leader has a supervisor who is here to support you in your own professional development.

Learning Community Leader Coordinator (LCLC)
Learning Community Programs is seeking Learning Community Leader Coordinators (LCLCs) for the Spring and Fall 2026 semesters who are committed to supporting students' engagement, event planning, and serving as a role model for the LCLs and Peer Leaders.
Step 1: Application
The Learning Community Leader Coordinator Application for 2026 has now closed.
Step 2: Application Review
The LCLC Supervisors will review the applications from LCLs that wish to return for next year.
Step 3: Interviews
Interviews will take place the week of October 20 - October 24, 2025.
Step 4: Offer Letters
Candidates will receive a phone call position offer, followed up by an offer letter. Phone calls will take place during the week of November 3, 2025.
Dates of Employment
The timeframes of employment for the LCLC role are as follows:
- November 1 to December 5, 2025: Orientation and training to be scheduled after team finalized
- January 12 to May 1, 2026: Spring Term Employment
- May 4 to August 14, 2026: Intermittent work to check and respond to communications, outreach to Student Leaders

Returning Learning Community Leader and UC 1500 Peer Leader
The input of Returning Learning Community Leaders and Peer Leaders is critical in the selection of the new student leaders. For that reason, we open the application early, so that individuals who know they wish to return to the position can let us know and not miss out.

Compensation
Compensation update: as of 1/1/2024 the new base pay rate is $11.30 per hour.
Returning LCLs will receive an additional $0.30 per hour increase each calendar year.

Learning Community Leader Coordinator
Fall 2025: A team orientation as well as individual onboarding sessions will be scheduled mid-to-end of November 2025.
January 2026: After team members are hired, spring schedules will be gathered to identify training times for all team members in January. Individual work schedules will be established with the team member's direct supervisor.

Learning Community Leader Coordinator Position Description
The Learning Community Leader Coordinator (LCLC) position is a student leader position in Learning Communities within University College at ĢƵ University. Together, we welcome, connect and support students in their transition(s) to and within OHIO University.
We seek student leaders who advance their own knowledge and understanding in how to engage across differences. This commitment is crucial as we support students of backgrounds on campus. We have a strong commitment to supporting a welcoming culture within the Learning Communities team.
In and out of the classroom, the Learning Community Leaders (LCL) and Peer Leaders (PLs) (LCLs & PLs are also referred to generally as “Student Leaders”) are charged with facilitating the students’ adjustment to ĢƵ University. The LCLC provides support to the Student Leaders and to their supervisor. They serve as a positive role model and resource for the Student Leaders throughout the fall semester when the seminars are in session. During the spring semester, the LCLCs support the fall semester wrap-up tasks, reporting, as well as Learning Communities projects. They also support the recruitment, selection, and training for the new LCL and Peer Leader staff teams.
On average, this position is 15 hours-per-week for both academic semesters; employment begins in the spring semester and continues through the fall semester. There is intermittent work over the summer semester. The LCLC is supervised by and directly reports to either the Coordinator of Student Leaders (CSL) or a Learning Communities Graduate Assistant (GA) (the CSL and GAs are also referred to generally as “Supervisors”. The LCLC may also serve as an LCL, if their time availability allows and at the discretion of the Director or Assistant Director.
This position is a Campus Security Authority which means that LCLCs are mandated reporters for any reports of sexual misconduct.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership to the Student Leaders to launch their community successfully.
- Communicate Welcome Weekend connection expectations.
- Support your supervisor in establishing Success Team Meetings and ensure all Student Leaders are signed up, attending, etc.
- Address questions and direct Student Leaders to appropriate resources for onboarding items such as Workforce, Human Resources, room reservations, reimbursements, etc.
- On an on-going basis, directly outreach and build relationships with up to 40 Student Leaders in the assigned workgroup.
- Serve as part of the support network for Student Leaders through co-facilitating and if need by, facilitating weekly Success Team Meetings (STMs).
- Work with your supervisor on developing a portion of the STM agenda each week.
- Create a positive, engaging experience for their team.
- Under the management of your supervisor, provide information to support giving ongoing and mid-year feedback to the Student Leaders.
- Gather information from Student Leaders about their programming efforts, collecting photos, quotes, and experiences to share on the Learning Community social media channels.
- Support the recruitment, selection, and training of the Student Leaders.
- Recruitment includes the returner application and selection process as well as the new recruitment and selection processes.
- Engage the returning Student Leaders in a separate training track to support their advancement as leader.
- Advance the Student Leader's sense of belonging through regular team builders, modeling what they can do with their class.
- Serve as a resource to the Student Leaders for issues they face throughout their work.
- Conduct weekly reviews of the Activity Tracker and STM attendance sheets to inform your supervisor and use reviews to support the Student Leaders in meeting role expectations.
- Conduct follow-up training with Student Leaders who are not present at the required trainings and onboard those hired after the training was conducted.
- Communicate with Student Leader staff during the summer to ensure they are engaged in the role, summer training, and address any questions.
- Support administrative tasks and projects associated with the Learning Community Programs.
- Attend a weekly LCLC staff meeting (this is likely to take place in the evening).
- Actively contribute to conversations on how to improve office systems, functions and operations and implement viable solutions.

- Admissions event resource tabling
- Inventory management
- Honey for the Heart
- Class assessments
- Safety First- alcohol and other drug discussions
- Recognition events
- Learning Community cluster development and review
Eligibility
- Maintain a commitment to collegiate success, including having a minimum GPA of 2.5.
- Maintain full-time student status of at least 12 and no more than 18 undergraduate credit hours, without prior approval.
- During the time of application and serving in the role, remain free of disciplinary status imposed through the University conduct system in addition to local, state, and federal laws.
- Complete the university hazing training for the calendar year of employment term.
Qualifications
- Four months service as an LCL or Peer Leader prior to starting the position spring term.
- Desire to work with incoming students and Student Leaders.
- Awareness of and willingness to problem-solve items that arise in the Student Leader positions.
- Ability to advance a culture and climate that honors sense of belonging of all students.
- Demonstrated ability to balance academics, employment and extracurricular activities.

- Other Learning Community duties that arise.

This position averages 8 hours-per-week during the fall semester. There are very limited number of positions available for spring semester.

- An informal gathering with the faculty/instructor
- Conduct "intentional interactions" with individuals or small groups to create connections
4. Support student success in the classroom
- Obtain syllabi for the connected core courses and hold study sessions prior to tests/exams
5. Serve as a liaison to the class by sharing information about campus resources, relaying information about events and activities taking place on campus.

UC 1500 Peer Leader Position Description
The UC 1500 Peer Leader (PL) position is a student leader position in the Learning Communities Office within University College at ĢƵ University. Together, we welcome, connect and support students in their transition(s) to and within OHIO University.
We seek student leaders who advance their own knowledge and understanding in how to engage across differences. This commitment is crucial as we support students of backgrounds on campus. We have a strong commitment to supporting a welcoming culture within the Learning Communities team.
The Campus Connections (UC 1500) course is intended for Transfer and Relocate students. A Peer Leader is connected to each UC 1500 class. The course is seven weeks with the focus on connecting students to campus, campus resources, and to each other. The Peer Leader will be expected to do four out-of-class activities that are of interest and align with the schedules of the students.
In and outside of the classroom, the PL is charged with facilitating the students’ adjustment to ĢƵ University. They serve as a positive role model and resource for students throughout the time of the course. Through assisting the instructor in delivery of the course material, PLs provide peer insights and coaching.
The PL is supervised by and directly reports to the Coordinator of Student Leaders (CSL) or a Learning Community Programs Graduate Assistant (GA). They also work collaboratively with their assigned UC 1900 instructor.

UC 2110 Peer Leader Position Description
The UC 2110 Peer Leader (referred to as “PL”) position is a student leader position in Learning Communities within the Office of the Provost at ĢƵ University. Together, we welcome, connect and support students in their transition(s) to and within OHIO University.
We seek student leaders who advance their own knowledge and understanding in how to engage across differences. This commitment is crucial as we support students of backgrounds on campus. We have a strong commitment to supporting a welcoming culture within the Learning Communities team.
The Spring Connections – Your Community Continued is tied to the UC 2110 course “Determining Your Path”. The primary audience for the course are first-year, second semester students. The course focuses on continuing connections of students to campus, to their area of study, and to alumni. There is a PL that is connected to each class. They serve as a positive role model and resource for students throughout the semester. The PL has more responsibility in the success of this class. They will help to reach out to Asst. Deans and coordinate field trips, organize panels, and welcome visiting alumni instructors to the class. Students want to hear the PL voice.
The PL is supervised by and directly reports to the Assistant Director of Learning Communities. They also work collaboratively with their assigned UC 2110 instructor.
This position averages 4 hours-per-week during the spring semester.
This position is a Campus Security Authority which means that PLs are mandated reporters for any reports of sexual misconduct they receive.
Responsibilities
- On an on-going basis, directly outreach and build relationships with up to 20 students within the UC 2110 course.
- Take the lead in UC 2110, along with the instructor, in planning and preparation for the seminar course in the community (1-hour per week plus class).
- Attend each class.
- Coordinate class field trips and panels within class.
- Help to facilitate class discussion.
- Coordinate/Plan class content and delivery with instructor during weekly one-on-one meetings.
- Support student success in and out of the classroom.
- Conduct a 1:1 meeting with students as a part of the course.
- Support students through major elements of the spring semester: housing sign up, course registration, move out, etc.
- Establish a class GroupMe as continued support communication channel.

- Minimum of two years of experience at the Athens campus.
