Secure Travel
Traveling abroad presents additional risks related to the theft of devices and data. Connecting from unfamiliar locations and networks imposes a new threat landscape from what you are traditionally exposed to. To safeguard both personal and institutional data, it is important to consider:
- Where you are traveling
- Which devices you are taking
- What data you will have access to through those devices
To support secure travel, the Information Security Office has published travel guidelines on the IT Security While Traveling webpage and developed a Secure Travel Standard. The standard outlines expectations for all OHIO employees who are working while also traveling – whether domestically or internationally.
Before You Travel
Employees planning to work while traveling must complete the following steps:
- Gain approval from your supervisor and HR to work while traveling.
- If traveling internationally, identify risk advisories for your destinations by viewing the
- Review all requirements outlined in the Secure Travel Standard before any and all travel.
- Notify the Information Security Office of your intention to work while traveling, at least one week prior to your departure, by completing .
-  and use it to access sensitive data and resources. We strongly encourage individuals working while traveling to use VDI in lieu of VPN for secure remote access.
- Follow the checklist on the IT Security While Traveling webpage to prepare for all stages of travel, including steps to take while abroad and after returning.
Why This Matters
Adhering to these guidelines is critical to protecting both personal and institutional data throughout your travel, as well as upon your return. Please contact the Information Security Office at security@ohio.edu if you have questions or need additional travel guidance.
