“From the Hills & Hollers” film series to screen “The Evening Hour,” a 2020 film based on OHIO alum Carter Sickels’ novel of the same name, on Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. Sickels will speak prior to the film.
The Athena Cinema is proud to announce an exciting lineup of Fall 2025 programming, featuring the return of many beloved showcase series alongside the debut of several innovative new ones.
On Monday, June 16, beginning at 7 p.m., the Athena Cinema will present a special screening of the film adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s classic novel “Mrs. Dalloway.”
The Athena Cinema is excited to announce that it will celebrate its 110th anniversary on June 3, 2025, with a public reception paired with a screening of “Cinema Paradiso.”
ĢƵ University will celebrate Moms Weekend April 4-6 with a wide variety of events for Bobcats and their family members.
From April 7–13, the Athens International Film + Video Festival will present its 52nd edition, showcasing over 200 films from more than 58 countries at the historic Athena Cinema in uptown Athens, OH.

This holiday season, the Athena Cinema will be hosting its annual Holiday Film Series. The series offers free admission to holiday movies in exchange for non-perishable food items or donations.
After 15 months of partial closures to conduct necessary structural renovations, The Athena Cinema is proud to announce the re-opening of two of its theaters just in time for an expanded slate of fall programming.

The 2023-2024 season of “The Met: Live in HD” has now been added to The Athena Cinema’s schedule of screenings taking place at The Ridges Auditorium.
The “From the Hills and Hollers: Appalachian Stories” film series will be shown with free admission, with events running from Sept 14, 2023 to April 18, 2024 in various locations.
Athena Cinema staff will continue working in the building throughout fall semester, and the front portion of the building is anticipated to remain open for regular lobby hours and sidewalk sales. Additionally, both local businesses located at 20 South Court St. will continue to maintain their regular operations.
This summer, everyone across the Athens community is invited to stay cool, enjoy delicious concessions treats and engage in the timeless tradition of watching movies on the big screen.
