Threads of Gratitude: A Quilts of Valor presentation at OHIO Southern

Few gestures carry the weight of gratitude quite like a handmade quilt. Stitched with care and designed to comfort, each one tells a story of respect for those who have served.

On Thursday, Nov. 6, will honor local veterans with these powerful symbols during , held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Riffe Rotunda.

The ceremony will feature the presentation of Quilts of Valor, handmade by members of the Material Hugs quilting guild, which includes retired and current OHIO Southern faculty members. Each quilt is personalized with the veteran’s name, the date of donation, and symbolic red, white, and blue patterns.

“These quilts aren’t just beautiful; they’re meant to hug the veterans and remind them of how deeply appreciated they are,” said Dr. Teresa McKenzie, coordinator of Veterans Services at ĢƵ University Southern, who helps organize the tribute each year.

Material Hugs was formed by Dr. Martha Evans, Dr. Miki Crawford, and Dr. Kim Keffer after Keffer became involved with the Quilts of Valor Foundation, a national volunteer organization that has awarded more than 250,000 quilts to veterans across the country. For Keffer, the work is deeply personal.

“I got into this because my aunt is a World War II veteran,” Keffer said. When her aunt was nominated for a Quilt of Valor, Keffer wanted to give back to the organization. Instead of a donation, they asked her to make quilts.

“I loved making my first quilt, and I loved the smile I got when I gave it,” Keffer added. “I was hooked.”

The annual ceremony has become a tradition at OHIO Southern, blending heartfelt storytelling with meaningful recognition. The event will conclude with an opportunity for attendees to meet and personally thank the veterans being honored.

“Every year, we make it a priority to celebrate our veterans and ensure they know they’re valued,” McKenzie said. “This year’s quilts make that message even more personal.”

The event is free and open to the public.
