International Student Union

The International Student Union (ISU) functions as the umbrella organization for internationally-focused student organizations at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University. The members come from all corners of the world, representing the collective educational, cultural and developmental interests of countries across the globe. 

ISU Vision 

To promote unity, diversity, and a global mindset within the university, the community, and the organizations we represent. 

ISU Mission

To represent Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University international students by fostering an inclusive community through developing global awareness, promoting inter-cultural exchange, and cultivating understanding with the university and the broader community.  

ISU Purpose and Objectives

ISU serves as an advocate for Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University international students and the umbrella organization for internationally focused student organizations at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University.

  • To represent, channel, organize, voice, international community's interests.
  • To promote a sense of community at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University.
  • To provide opportunities for Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University international students to develop leadership and career-related skills.
  • To advise and assist all international students and ISU member organizations.
  • To support and endorse other Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University organizations which share ISU’s vision and/or mission.
  • To serve as a programming body for international students and organizations that organize events which increase intercultural exchange and awareness for Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University and the communities for which it serves.

Amadou Bah

Country of Origin: The Gambia

Program and year of study: M.A. in International Development Studies, 2nd year

Why ISU: As an international student, ISU has already shown me the power of community and cultural exchange. I want to contribute to a welcoming environment where every culture is celebrated, voices are heard, and students feel at home. ISU’s mission to foster inclusivity and global awareness deeply resonates with me. 

Fun Fact: I’ve lived and studied across four continents; Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America; which has shaped my global perspective.

Programming Director
Parwana Hamdam

Country of Origin: Afghanistan

Program and year of study: PhD in Communication Studies – Health Communication Track, 2nd Year
Scripps College of Communication, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University. Research focus: Maternal health among immigrant and displaced communities, with an emphasis on cultural and communication challenges in healthcare settings. My work is rooted in applied research aimed at improving real-world health outcomes for marginalized populations.

Why ISU: ISU creates a warm and inclusive space where international students can celebrate their cultures, build community, and support one another through the journey of studying abroad. I joined ISU because I believe in the importance of cultural exchange and wanted to contribute to making Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University a more welcoming place for students from around the world.

Fun Fact: I’m passionate about exploring different cultures, especially through their traditional clothing, food, and market life! I love visiting local markets, trying street food, and learning how culture shapes everyday experiences.

Nubwa Josiah

Country of Origin: Nigeria

Program and year of study: Instructional Technology Year 1 (PhD)

Why ISU: Being part of the International Students Union (ISU) means more than service to international students, It means belonging to a family, it also means building bridges across cultures, creating a sense of home away from home, and advocating for the needs of our diverse international student body. I believe in the power of community. As an international student, I’ve experienced both the excitement and the challenges that come with studying abroad. ISU was one of the first spaces where I felt seen, supported, and connected. By helping others navigate their journey, celebrating our cultures, and working together to ensure every international student at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University feels valued, heard, and empowered, I am excited serve and to be part of this great community.

Fun Fact: I sing like a bird.

Country of Origin: Ghana

Program and year of study: Communication and Development Studies, Second Year

Why ISU: Foremost, as an international student, I identify myself as automatically being part of the group. Therefore, the enthusiasm to contribute to the growth of the organization and learning from such a diverse space.

Fun Fact: I love to play soccer and volleyball!

Program and year of study: 2nd year, Communication and Development Studies

Why ISU: ISU brings people from around the world together to share, connect, and feel at home. It’s a welcoming space where every culture is celebrated and every voice matters. It offers international students a platform to be heard, to belong, and to lead. Whether it’s through events, support, or just making new friends, ISU helps international students feel a sense of belonging.

Fun Fact: I know WWE (professional wrestling) is scripted, but I choose to ignore that reality and still watch it with unshakable passion — I just can’t let it go!

Secretary
Angeles Possetti

Country of Origin: Argentina

Program and year of study: Second-year MA in Spanish; first-year MA in Latin American Studies. My focus is on Latin American immigrants and communities in the United States

Why ISU: I joined the International Student Union because it serves as a powerful reminder that every culture matters. As a translator, my mission is to build bridges — to ensure that no one is left behind. Communication should know no borders, because diversity has no borders. I believe in a culturally diverse world that comes together to create meaningful change, and ISU is a space where that vision becomes reality.

Fun Fact: I'm passionate about languages! I love learning new languages and exploring different cultures — it's one of the best ways to connect with people around the world.

Country of Origin: Guinea

Program and year of study: 1st year Master's in War and Peace Studies

Why ISU: The International Student Union (ISU) at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University is more than just a student organization; it’s a platform for advocacy, cultural exchange, and community building. As an international student, I have experienced the challenges of adjusting to a new academic system and environment, which has deepened my appreciation for ISU’s vital role in creating a supportive space for students like me.

I am committed to amplifying the voices of international students and leading efforts that promote academic success, professional development, and social integration. Equally important, I believe in reinforcing strong collaboration between ISU, university leadership, and the broader Athens community to ensure that international perspectives are meaningfully included in decision-making processes.

ISU’s mission to connect cultures, foster understanding, and empower students resonates deeply with me. Through purposeful leadership and inclusive action, I aim to build on this mission and ensure that every international student feels seen, heard, and supported.
 

Fun Fact: One of the things I genuinely enjoy is uplifting others through kind words and a good sense of humor. I find great meaning in bringing light to serious moments, offering encouragement when it’s needed most, and creating spaces where people feel seen and valued. I believe that positive energy shared with sincerity has the power to heal, inspire, and transform the way we connect with one another.
