Music Theory Pedagogy Certificate

The Music Theory Pedagogy Certificate affords graduate music students the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and experience in teaching music theory and aural skills beyond what the Music Theory Pedagogy course can offer.

This certificate can be completed in two semesters, although it is more common for it to be completed in three.

  • Admission Requirements

    This certificate requires a bachelor’s degree in music or a related field, enrollment in a graduate music degree program, and an application interview with the certificate director.

    International Students: This program does not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University, and an I-20 may not be issued based on admission to this certificate. However, an I-20 may be issued based on admission to a residential graduate degree program in music.

  • Courses & Curriculum

    Students take three courses as part of the certificate: the Music Theory Pedagogy course, a course in supervised teaching, and a capstone course.

    In Supervised Teaching, students will observe a variety of theory and aural skills classes at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ University and then develop lesson plans for three different music theory/aural skills courses, to be implemented by guest teaching those classes.

    The capstone focuses on synthesizing current trends in music theory pedagogy with knowledge and experience gained from students’ observations and supervised teaching.
