Undergrad Pay Policy
The policy is specific to Athens faculty teaching an overload as a COB on-campus, Athens Online, or eCampus course.
Athens faculty instructing a RHE-only course are subject to RHE pay scales.
One section is defined as the standard departmental enrollment as determined by the department chair based on the delivery of the course and the typical size where full pay is $2,964 per credit hour for faculty members and $2,340 per credit hour for staff members.
For example, many introductory courses will tend to be larger while upper-level major courses may be smaller though exceptions to this can occur depending on the department. Online courses will tend to be larger than face-to-face courses constrained by room size. Courses with certain pedagogical components (e.g. writing intensive) may typically be smaller than lecture-based courses. And so on. Each department should establish standards for what is typical for their courses but exceptions may occur. Expected typical sizes for summer courses will often be smaller than those offered in Fall or Spring.
With online courses, the department will normally combine sections from various campuses (Athens Online, eCampus and RHE) into a single course for purposes of determining compensation since students in those locations can be merged in the LMS. In addition, the availability of facilitators and/or graders will be considered when setting the typical size of the course.
The chair/director should communicate the expected size for the course when arranging the overload with the faculty member.
Exceptions will be initiated by the chair/director in consultation with the Dean’s office to set compensation when this happens to maintain consistency across departments.
The standard course rate is paid when expected total enrollment falls within the 75-125% range of the typical size for that course.
Under-Enrolled Sections
For classes below 75% enrollment, the department and college will decide if the course should be offered based on student need for the course, whether other sections might be offered in other semesters and the workload of the faculty member. Normally, the instructor will be paid a prorated amount down to 25% enrollment (e.g. for a 50% enrolled course pay is normally reduced to 50%). Courses below 25% should normally not be offered.
Over-Enrolled Courses
For classes above 125% enrollment, the instructor will receive additional compensation. Once enrollment approaches 200% splitting the course into two sections should be considered. Additional compensation will normally be calculated.
