Teaching Portfolio Guidelines

As approved by the CoB faculty on March 4, 2011. Adapted from the Provost’s Guidelines for the Presidential Teaching Award.

The Teaching CIT believes it is important, given our college’s mission, that general guidelines be established for creating individual, teaching portfolios within the College’s departments. The purpose of a teaching portfolio is to encourage reflection that leads to improvements in teaching. The Teaching CIT recommends the following as best practices. These items should be covered but the organization and format is up to the faculty member.

Suggested Format

Each portfolio should be between 15-20 typed pages using 1.5 line spacing, an 12 point font, one inch margins, and headers with your name and page numbers. Appendices will not be accepted.

Required Materials

  1. Cover Page
  2. Table of Contents
  3. Teaching Philosophy (1-2 pages)
  4. List of courses taught and numbers of students enrolled for at least the last two years
  5. List of numerical averages from student evaluations for the last two years, with dept. averages

Teaching Practices Innovations

  1. Statement of how student progress is measured, i.e., grading practices, grade distributions, etc.
  2. Description of how you integrate recent theories and methodologies into your classes
  3. Description of your instructional methodology in relation to your discipline
  4. Design and implementation of instructional approaches. For instance, describe how you harmonize learning objectives, learning activities, and learning assessment.

Developmental Activities

  1. Past activities—e.g., describe times you were mentored
  2. Planned future activities

  2. Influence on curriculum

Mentoring and Advising Students

  1. Advising activities related to career and curriculum
  2. Thesis and dissertation advising

Mentoring Faculty in Regard to Instruction

  1. Description of activities in regard to mentoring faculty
  2. Workshops
  3. Colloquia

Scholarship with Respect to Teaching

  1. Publications
  2. Conferences
  3. Grants received in relation to teaching

Teaching Honors and Awards

  1. List and brief description of awards received
