Course Buyout Guidelines
When faculty members obtain externally sponsored grant funding and wish to be released from teaching a course to have time to work on the grant, they may request a course buyout (i.e., release).
Eligibility
Full-time tenured, tenure-track, and instructional COB faculty
Policy Guidelines
- Faculty may be released from one 3-credit course per academic year (exceptions considered;
require approval of the dean and chair). - Course buyout applies to the faculty member’s regular teaching load.
- Course buyout amount is $14,000 per course.
- Course buyout amount must be included in an externally sponsored grant budget (and be an allowable expense for the granting agency).
- Grant proposals must be submitted through the Office of Sponsored Research and Sponsored
Programs. - Faculty are not permitted to teach an overload in a semester that they receive a course buyout.
- Faculty should discuss their plan to request a course buyout with their chair in advance.
- Faculty must obtain course buyout approval from their chair to ensure the availability of course coverage prior to submitting the grant proposal.
